Are Hemp Seed Oil and CBD Oil the Same Thing?
As the CBD market continues to grow in popularity and people look to try these emerging products, there can still be confusion in knowing the difference between hemp seed oil and CBD oil. When it comes to the CBD and hemp industries, there are so many acronyms, terms and phrases to get to know. There are also rampant opinions and misinformation to sift through, too.
When it comes to the difference between Hemp Seed Oil and CBD Oil, here are some facts to help you compare and contrast these two natural compounds available to the public.
While the update to the U.S. Farm bill in 2018 allowed for hemp to be grown for CBD, Hemp Seed Oil has been in a multitude of products for decades. The reason for this is because Hemp Seed Oil (or, “Hemp Oil”) is an oil that is without CBD. Hemp Seed Oil is made by cold pressing the seeds of the hemp plant much like the process that is used to make products like Sunflower Seed or Sweet Almond oils.
Highly moisturizing, Hemp Seed oil is rich in antioxidants and a popular staple in beauty and skin care products. A great addition to lotions and body creams, Hemp Seed Oil can be the perfect addition to a routine.
Hemp Seeds are also in the category of “superfoods”. Usually found at your local health food store, the seeds are rich in proteins and Omega 6 and 3. Hemp seed oil can also be found as a carrier oil (for essential oil fragrance or other blends) or in products like Hemp seed milks and creamers. Some seeds are even packaged as whole, dried and salted like in snacks or salads.
If you’re looking to benefit from the potential of CBD, however, Hemp Seed Oil won’t be able to help you.
CBD, on the other hand, is one of the chemical compounds called cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. There are hundreds of these beneficial cannabinoids, but they’re extracted from the flowers after the plant has grown and made it through harvest. The hemp plant must grow and go through photosynthesis for there to be cannabinoids like CBD and CBG to be present to extract.
These cannabinoids are, then, removed from the hemp plant using an extraction process. It is that resulting extract that contains the cannabinoids, terpenes and the small amount of natural THC (.3% or less) that is found in the plant’s genetic makeup
At Kurativ, we utilize this extract in multiple ways. If the extract remains with the same cannabinoid profile as the whole plant, this is the base for our Full Spectrum products.
If there is a desire to have products where the THC has been removed, we also offer Isolate products and Isolate blends that include the all-important CBG.
While shopping online for different products that come from the multifaceted hemp plant, it is important to do your due diligence and here are some tips that may be helpful:
Always take time to read the labeling of the product as well as the third-party testing that has been done on the product. Third-party testing is a requirement for CBD products in the United States. At Kurativ, you can easily find all of our third-party testing on the “Lab Results” tab at the top menu or just click HERE.
Third party testing results are lab tests that are a great way to learn what is in a product that you’re shopping for. It will breakdown the level of each prominent and detected minor cannabinoid along with their concentration or amount in the batch. Companies acting in compliance, and who desire transparency, have them easy-to-find and to read.
Since Hemp Seed Oil is not regulated as Cannabinoid extract products – because of the lack of CBD in the seeds - they won’t be as restricted and, in product ingredient labels, it will say “hemp oil” or “hemp seed oil”.
Remember that CBD product labels will usually say “CBD” and / or “Cannabidiol”. CBD products will also have a milligram indicator (mg) which will detail the number of milligrams of CBD in the entire bottle and a per-serving breakdown.
Another great label feature that is available – one you’ll find on Kurativ packaging – is the QR code. This code links right to the needed information for the product that you’re purchasing. Just point your smartphone camera at the black and white box and learn everything in the breakdown of what you’re holding in your hand.
